They weren’t going to take my soul What’s going on? We didn’t know War against the Jews “Jews out! Jews out!”
Shot on the spot Nothing I can do Here we were Auschwitz
We knew the stories Gassed, burned It was beyond belief They weren’t going to take my soul
Germans locked us in Jews crying alone They kept coming 40 Boxcars full of dead bodies
Using the Jews own fat as fuel Worst thing I’ve seen in my life No escape from this prison We were walking dead
War against the Jews It was inhumane That was it, that simple But they weren’t going to take my soul
Rationale: The rationale behind the poem was to express the horrors of the holocaust and how it affected such a large group of people. It was not just a race or nationality that was targeted, but the people of a similar religion. The people killed were of multiple races, nationalities, and skin color. As stated, it was a war against the Jews and it did not take long for the stories of Auschwitz and the other concentration camps to reach the ears of Jews across Europe. Jews were burned, gassed, and tortured while in these camps and the future for them never showed any sign of getting better. However, the poem shows that small light of hope in the lines, “they weren’t going to take my soul.” Just that small line shows unbelievable strength to fight for survival and to push through the horrifying era of the death camps. All survivors today and all those that were murdered showed this strength to continue on during this trying time which shows how powerful the will to survive can be.
